Every since I began researching my family history, I've been captivated by the numerous small black cemeteries I’ve come across on my visits to Preston, Georgia.  I've decided to attempt to photograph and index some of the gravestones there. I will start with the cemetery located on the grounds of the Evans Chapel C.M.E. Church. Because I only visit the area once or twice a year, it will probably take another year to complete the project. Once completed I will offer the index and photographs to one or more of the research sites that handle this type of material.  Below is my initial work. I didn’t get a lot done on my initial outing (Aug 2006) because I stopped to talk to men working on repairing the Church. Among other things we talked about the old one-room schoolhouse that appears to be located on the church grounds.  But interestingly, my family owns the schoolhouse and the piece on land that it sits on. One of the men suggested that my family look into getting money from one of the Georgia historical organization to restore the old schoolhouse. I will look into that.
